"No Price War, Let Quality Speak: A Chemical Professional’s Persistence and Reflection"

Shijiazhuang FeiZi Chemical Technology Co., Ltd

This year’s economic situation is indeed challenging. I’d like to take this opportunity to share some thoughts with our clients and peers, hoping to offer some comfort.

There’s a popular joke circulating in the industry lately: A procurement manager looked for 4 traders for a 5-million-yuan order; the traders asked 8 factories; the factories then inquired with 16 raw material suppliers... And guess what? Prices were slashed to the bone, but the quality turned out utterly terrible. In the end, the factory went under, payments were never made, and no one benefited.

Doing business these days, especially in the chemical industry, really reflects that old saying: "Starve your competitors, exhaust yourself, and cheat your customers." Some companies, in their rush to secure orders, offer quotes that are increasingly ruthless, completely disregarding costs and consequences. They talk about "small profits but quick returns," but in reality, they’ve long eliminated any profit margin and can only cut corners on raw materials and processes.

There was a boss who, last year, used low prices to snatch over a dozen major clients. His workshop operated day and night, and it seemed impressive. But at the end of the year, when he looked at the books: utilities, rent, salaries, logistics, environmental compliance costs... After deducting all expenses, his net profit was less than what his driver earned. I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry when I heard that.

A healthy industry ecosystem should never be about "hungry wolves fighting for scraps," but rather "good money driving out bad." Yet what we see now is the opposite—those who compete on price are thriving more than those who compete on quality, and those who follow the rules are being squeezed out of the market. Once this cycle begins, no one wins.

That’s why my company made a decision a long time ago: we’re not joining the race. We won’t engage in cutthroat price wars, accept orders clearly below cost, or compromise product quality just to win customers. Some say we’re "lying flat," but we prefer to call it—"holding the line."

In fact, whether in the chemical industry or any other field, the principle remains the same. Not all competition is worth joining, and not all "opportunities" are worth pursuing. It’s like that top scorer from Peking University who went into selling pork—many laughed at him for "lying flat," but his annual sales have long exceeded 100 million yuan.

Sometimes, taking a step back isn’t giving up; it’s about focusing energy on what truly matters—like technological upgrades, process optimization, and customer service. Let quality speak, operate with integrity. Though progress may be slower, every step is solid.

In the end, the market will return to rationality. What we can do is maintain our own pace—stay calm, don’t join the frenzy, don’t lose our way. Encouragement to all our peers.
