CAS No. 85-91-6
Molecular formula: C9H11NO2
Molecular weight: 165.19
EINECS number 201-642-6
Nature:
Methyl n-methylo-aminobenzoate is a colorless liquid with an aromatic flavor similar to that of grapefruit.
It is soluble in ethanol, ether and benzene, but almost insoluble in water.
Purpose:
It can be used as a bird repellent to drive away birds and other pests.
1. Medicine and Medicinal Chemistry
Local anesthetic precursor
The structure of this compound is similar to that of Benzocaine, which is a commonly used local anesthetic. Through further structural modifications (such as the introduction of alkyl or acyl groups), derivatives with improved anesthetic effects or lower toxicity may be developed.
Intermediates of analgesic or anti-inflammatory drugs
Methylaminobenzoate compounds may be involved in the synthesis of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or analgesics.
Neuroactive molecule
Methylamino may affect the neurotransmitter system (such as dopamine and serotonin receptors), and is potentially used in the development of psychotropic drugs.
2. Organic synthesis intermediates
Diazotization and coupling reactions:
The methylamino group on the aromatic ring can be converted into hydroxyl, halogen or other functional groups through diazotization reactions, which are used to construct complex molecules (such as dyes or drugs).
Ester group hydrolysis or amolysis:
Methyl ester groups can be hydrolyzed into carboxylic acids or react with amines to form amides, expanding their synthetic applications.
Synthesis of heterocyclic compounds
As a starting material, it participates in the synthesis of heterocyclic structures such as quinoline and benzothiazole (commonly found in drugs or functional materials).
3. Dyes and photosensitive materials
Azo dye precursors
Methylamino can be diazotized to form azo dyes (used in textiles, inks or biological dyeing).
Photosensitizer components:
The benzoate structure may be used to design photoresponsive materials (such as photoinitiators or ultraviolet absorbers).
4. Agricultural Chemistry
Intermediate of pesticides or herbicides:
Compounds with similar structures can be used to synthesize molecules with insecticidal or herbicidal activities.
