Chemical properties

Colorless to slightly yellow liquid. The boiling point is 244℃, the relative density is 1.010-1.020, the refractive index is 1.493-1.496, and the flash point is above 93℃. It is soluble in 4 volumes of 70% ethanol and oils. It has a sweet and dry grassy aroma, rose - lily of the valley aroma, with fruity, spicy and creamy scents. It also has a background of Sooty and floral scents. The aroma is mild and leaves an average aftertaste. The taste is warm and sweet, with a fruity and grassy aroma of strawberry raspberry.

Purpose

The most useful variety among phenylethanol derivatives can be used in many good perfumes.

It works very well in two types of floral formulas, namely rose and lily of the valley.

It is also suitable for use in jasmine, ylang-ylang, magnolia, carnations, lavender, as well as Oriental and woody fragrances. It serves as a modifier and enhancer for floral fragrances.

It can also be used in tobacco flavoring and edible essences such as honey, strawberry, raspberry, apricot, peach and other fruit scents.

 

Spice and flavor industry
Fruity/floral notes:

This ester has a sweet and fruity aroma similar to that of pineapple, apple and jasmine, and is often used in the formulation of food flavorings, cosmetics (perfumes, shampoos) and household fragrance products.

When compounded with other esters (such as acetate and butyrate), it can enhance the layering and persistence of the aroma.

2. Organic synthesis intermediates
Transesterification reaction

Propionate groups can be converted into other esters (such as acetate esters and benzoate esters) through hydrolysis or alcoholysis reactions, which are used in the synthesis of higher-value fragrances or medicines.

Chiral synthesis

The α -methylbenzyl alcohol is partly a chiral center (R/S configuration) and may be used in asymmetric catalysis or chiral drug synthesis (such as sedatives, antihistamines).

3. Food additives
Edible flavoring

At the compliant dosage (subject to food safety standards of various countries), it can be used for flavoring candies, beverages and baked goods.

4. Solvents and plasticizers
High boiling point solvent

It is used in the coatings, inks or resins industry as an environmentally friendly solvent to replace some traditional benzene-based solvents.

Polymer material additives

As a plasticizer, it improves the flexibility of plastics (such as PVC).
